GES Fish Tank

The current tank at GES was refurbished and stocked in September of 2009. While we were able to secure a great deal of donated items, mostly from our local PetSmart, there still were costs involved. The PTA was able to provide funding for the initial setup and the ongoing maintenance costs through the Landscape/Beautification Committee.  We currently have 1 parent volunteer who did this work as well as the monthly water changes that are done to ensure the health of the tank and its inhabitants.

4th grade students currently feed the fish daily and autofeeders do the work when school is not in session..

Look inside and you will find the following peaceful fish:

6 Corydoras – also known as cory catfish, cory cats, or corys. They are a tropical catfish in the armored catfish family. They spend most of their time on the bottom of the tank, resting, or looking for food among the gravel. Occasionally one might dart to the surface for a gulp of air – this is completely normal. These fellows will grow to 2 - 3 inches long.

6 Silver  Dollars – a tropical fish closely related to piranha and pacu – not to worry – these are non-aggressive  omnivores and will feed happily on flake food. They can grow to almost six inches in a few years, and live to be 10 years old.

6 Bala Sharks – not a real shark – also known as the silver shark or shark minnow. They are mellow and will not bother their tank mates, even when reaching their full size of 12 inches (although it will take them years to get that big). Life span for these fish can be as long as 10 years.

6 Rainbow fish – these Australian natives will grow to about 4 inches, and develop lovely colors as they age. When they are excited, you can see their colors change before your eyes.
