We have many spring bulbs blooming there right now in the ground and in the containers. The crocus started out and now there are plenty of daffodils & hyacinths up. The many iris and lilies will be following shortly. We also have many daylilies available to us from a donor if and when we are ready to plant them.
We also have lots of weeds coming up and perennials in need of cleaning up. While we can certainly attempt to organize a group cleanup day in the next month, I invite you to stop at the school at your convenience, whether it be for 30 minutes or 2 hours, and help spruce it up. We were there yesterday doing some work and there’s plenty more to be done.
Things that can be done now are:
- pulling and digging weeds
- cutting back overgrown plants and last year’s blooms of plants such as the sedum stalks, daylilies, iris, mums and hostas
- Pulling the
- Picking up loose garbage and debris
The main areas I see that we should focus on are:
- The main corner from the mailbox around to the sidewalk path that leads from the parking lot to the main school building where car riders are dropped off and picked up.
- The front entrance and surrounding beds and containers that greet every visitor, employee and student at the school
- The side of the school between cafeteria and the PE trailer. That bed has a lot of great plants but also has a terrible weed problem.
- The courtyard of the school annex, aka Specialty center. The beds there were revamped late last summer by an eagle scout and his volunteers and we should care for them.
- The garden around the GES sign.
- The plants around the flagpole

I would like to see if we can strive for the Monday return from Spring Break as a day when the grounds are looking fresher. The week of Spring Break would be a great time to come out to the school for an hour with the kids (and husbands?) and clean up. In the past, the PTA has been able to get mulch from the county convenience center and if they have some when we are ready, I’m sure we can do that again, even if it is bucket by bucket!
